19th century

The art of the 19th century was complex and multifaceted, old styles were revived and new ones created. With the emergence of protest, artists want more freedom in subject matter and technique. The realistic painter represents the world. Along with the ideas of enlightenment a romantic movement was created on the nostalgia for a historical past and on the imagination. The colonial conquests will also bring out a new style and drawings as well as the industrial era will have an impact on the artists and the subjects as landscape, portrait and figures.
