Japan/ China

The first gallery specializing in ancient photography of Japan opened in 1863, showing for the first time reproductions of major cities such as Yokohama as well as period costumes. Felice Beato from 1880 will reproduce photos of Japan in the same tradition as the vintage Japanese prints of Hokusai. One of the first to take photographs of China, Malaysia, Cambodia and Indochina was John Thomson in 1865.
